For graduate Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha are you expected to know everything about everyone?
Q. I am a senior and attend a well known HBCU.I tried for Alpha Kappa Alpha, but unfortunately they didn't have a line this year. I am now focusing on the graduate chapter, but I had a few questions. Am I expected to know the same information (full names, hometowns, line-names, majors, clubs) that I had to memorize for undergrad? (basically stalking lol) One more question I thought of, are there a certain number of credit hours needed for grad school before I can be invited? Thanks!

A. I too, went to a prominent HBCU and am looking into AKA grad chapter. Graduate chapter is a little different. It would be helpful to know at least a little something on some of the members, but I don't think they expect you to be as knowlegeable as you might have been in undergrad since they're not as accessible. But when you go to the events do network as much as possible so you can get to know them. Also, you don't have to be in grad school at all to pledge a graduate chapter. You just have to have a bachelor's degree. Hope this helps!

Is there a specific format my interest letter to Alpha Kappa Alpha should have?
Q. I am very interested in becoming a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha. I understand everything that needs to be included in my interest letter, but I'm not sure as to what format to use. Please help (preferably members of AKA). Thank you in advance!

A. 1. The letter should be one page in length. 2. It should tell us why, specifically, you believe that you should be offered membership. 3. It should tell us what you have to offer the sorority. 4. It should give us an explanation as to why you want to be a member of our sorority. 5. You can leave out some of the more obvious things, like what school u attend. 6. You should approach writing it like you are in an interview; think of some of the questions that would matter to the the interviewer (above mentioned points) and answer them in the letter. 7. The letter should open you up to the chapter members

A. If the school doesn't have a chapter, you might have to go online to the organizations national website, aka1908.com to find a chapter close to you. The website also holds an immense amount of information about the oragnzation as well that you might want to check out. Good luck!!

A. Start off by visiting the national website at Learn the history, founders, incorporators, national platforms, national presidents (past a present) and all other info on the site. If the chapter at your school has a website, become familiar with their history and charter members. If you haven't started on your community service, start now. Although we only take the community service you've done 2 years prior to the formal rush, we look at what you're doing in community. You never know whom you're helping or working with. Attend the functions the chapter holds on campus. Also, make sure your grades are above a 2.5. Alot of chapters require a gpa higher than what the national office requires. Don't wait until the last minute to try and get… [cont.]

A. It would be great if you attended some events that the chapters in your area were hosting. Since it is our Centennial Year, there should be plenty of things going on. You may also want to visit our website: aka1908.com. There is a lot of useful information there as well. Since Graduate Level Membership is invitation only as you have stated, you really have to keep your eyes open for those events. There is a chapter locator on our website that will help you find chapters in your area. One of the most important things I can tell you is to really put some thought into pursuing not only my Elite organization, but any organization. This is a life-long committment! A. Initially Xi Omega was the first chapter in D.C and the area just expanded to three chapters. Rho Mu Omega being the last one in 1988, which is my chapter. Xi Zeta Omega is the other chapter. We work together on many projects and are not as separate as it seems. You can check out the websites and/or attend functions just to see which chapter fits you best. Each chapter all over the world is different, but we don't profess that one is better than the other. The D.C. area is a very big area and Sorors join the chapter that they are most comfortable with. Feel free to visit www.rhomuomega.org to check out my chapter in particular.

A. Dear Interested Applicant, There are a few things that I must tell you before answering your question. Primarily, ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha are not your Sorors until you have been initiated into our Sisterhood. I do not want to appear snobbish; however, it is offensive to be addressed as a member of our organization when you are not. In the future, please refer to ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha as members and not as Sorors because that would not aid you in becoming a member of our organization (but I honestly think any of the other Sororities would find it offensive as well). In regards to your questions: Each individual chapter decides the time for their rushes; therefore, you will need to look out for any flyers or posters denoting the… [cont.]

A. Yes, you can if you feel its okay for you and you won't be steesing out. I am not a member, but I have many family members and friends whom are and quite a few joined as undergrads and had children at the time and afterwards. But what I will tell you is that my fam and friends at times had to make choices, and sometimes it was okay for them to bring their child with them to an event, and some times I noticed that they would just elect to not fully participate in an event due to them having a child. I must say that they all are strong women and did what they had to do, and some told me that they felt the members respected them more for showing dedication by still bringing their child (of course to age appropiate events) and showing up. … [cont.]

A. I would suggest contacting the chapter officers (if the website lists them) and just expressing that you are interested in learning about events open to the public in the near future. This is not soliciting membership, but rather a sincere effort on your part to "be in the know" of what events and programs that they are having so that you may support their efforts. Also, utilize people who are in the area, some chapters just have a "word of mouth" tradition and that may be your most valuable tool? Are you volunteering in the community and attending church. I would like to believe that both of these avenues will undoubtedbly lead you to a member sooner or later :) Also look in local newspapers and even look for flyers in public places (e.g [cont.]

A. I would say that you definitely have a chance, just as long as you have all the the completed materials required for membership when you attend the formal rush. You say that you are the "walking model" for AKA. I hope that you do not express that mentality to the AKAs at your school because it may come across that you are being cocky or presumptuous. Other than that stay involved in the campus activities and definitely make an effort to get to know the girls on campus. Good luck!

But read as much available info about the sorority and try to find the chapter's website. Most chapters put up flyers of their events on campus message boards, etc. Also, make sure you get involved in other organizations or clubs. This would be a great chance for you to meet some chapter members as well, because a lot of sorority women are already involved in other organizations before they cross and continue to be active afterwards. Should I consider joining the Kappa Alpha Psi?
Q. I am planning to transfer to another university to complete my 4-year degree in engineering. I found out that throughout my life I was very shy and not in the spotlight and I would like to make a change since this is probably the last time I will attend school until I enter the workforce. I am considering of joining the Kappa Alpha Psi because they are considered to be the ladies man and one of the most well known black fraternities on campus. Also I will be able to have alot more friends, possibly girlfriends, and access to parties and events.
Asked by Michael - Sat Jan 2 12:20:42 2010 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. If the only reason you want to join is to gain popularity then I would advise not pursuing membership, because all you will be is a shy fraternity member. You can be popular without being a member of a Greek organization. You just have to have faith in yourself and put yourself out there.

A. Depends on how much time your major takes up (ie: how rigorous is it? do you have to spend a lot of time on it?), what you're looking for in joining these organizations and how they will benefit you in the long run. Business fraternities are still very social, though they focus more on attaining business connections and it looks really good on your resume. Social fraternities focus more on the general aspect of college, such as social connections and alumni connections. They're more focused in being well-known and mixing with other social organizations. They also focus on "brotherhood"..though I must say, each organization varies on their importance on it. You can still get all of this with a business fraternity. White social… [cont.]
