A. If the school doesn't have a chapter, you might have to go online to the organizations national website, aka1908.com to find a chapter close to you. The website also holds an immense amount of information about the oragnzation as well that you might want to check out. Good luck!!

Is there a specific format my interest letter to Alpha Kappa Alpha should have?
Q. I am very interested in becoming a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha. I understand everything that needs to be included in my interest letter, but I'm not sure as to what format to use. Please help (preferably members of AKA). Thank you in advance!

A. 1. The letter should be one page in length. 2. It should tell us why, specifically, you believe that you should be offered membership. 3. It should tell us what you have to offer the sorority. 4. It should give us an explanation as to why you want to be a member of our sorority. 5. You can leave out some of the more obvious things, like what school u attend. 6. You should approach writing it like you are in an interview; think of some of the questions that would matter to the the interviewer (above mentioned points) and answer them in the letter. 7. The letter should open you up to the chapter members

What are the requirements for a student joining a sorority(Alpha Kappa Alpha) if you are a transfer student?
Q. Im a young lady intrested in becoming a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha and was wondering on what requirements I would need to have if I'm going to be transfering to another school for the spring semester. Can someone please help me and maybe give me a better insite on what I need to do to become a member of this sorority?
Asked by cocodivine04 - Fri Aug 17 20:06:36 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. As a transfer student you must have at least one semester in which you were enrolled "full time" (at my school it's 12 + hours) as well as at the very least a "C+" GPA, although your College/University might require a higher GPA. So pretty much you would be allowed to attend Rush when you are in your second semester at your school.

Is there a graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha affiliated with the University of Phoenix?
Q. I have currently enrolled in a masters program at the University of Phoenix, I have been interested in learning more about Alpha Kappa Alpha and would just like to know if there is any chapter at this particular university. Thanks in advance

A. You do not need to be in Graduate school in order to obtain membership into the sorority. You need to have completed your bachelors degree from an accredited university with a C+ average. If you did not finish your bachelors with a C+ average, then you will need to have completed your masters from and accredited university in order to obtain membership. I am not sure if the University of Phoenix applies you would need to find out this information on your own. Graduate membership is by invitation only, so you will need to find what chapters are located in your area. Try to attend as many events as possible to get to know the Sorors in your area. A. Contact the regional director in your area to see what your opitions are. You may be able to charter a chapter at your school if never had a chapter. Here's the link that has the contact info for your area:

A. Dear Interested Applicant, There are a few things that I must tell you before answering your question. Primarily, ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha are not your Sorors until you have been initiated into our Sisterhood. I do not want to appear snobbish; however, it is offensive to be addressed as a member of our organization when you are not. In the future, please refer to ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha as members and not as Sorors because that would not aid you in becoming a member of our organization (but I honestly think any of the other Sororities would find it offensive as well). In regards to your questions: Each individual chapter decides the time for their rushes; therefore, you will need to look out for any flyers or posters denoting the… [cont.]

A. I would say that you definitely have a chance, just as long as you have all the the completed materials required for membership when you attend the formal rush. You say that you are the "walking model" for AKA. I hope that you do not express that mentality to the AKAs at your school because it may come across that you are being cocky or presumptuous. Other than that stay involved in the campus activities and definitely make an effort to get to know the girls on campus. Good luck!

Alpha Kappa Alpha Graduate Membership in Los Angeles?
Q. I am interested in membership into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, on the graduate level. I am relocating to Los Angeles in August, and I don't know anyone in the community. How can I go about meeting the ladies of the various chapters? What would be the best method for contacting local chapters? Is it appropriate to call, send mail, or email?

A. The best thing to do is to go online to www.aka1908.com and find links to the graduate chapters websites in L.A. From there you can see if the chapters have any upcoming events posted that the public can attend. Please do not call, mail or email chapters to avoid soliciting membership. Remain active in your community by becoming part of other volunteer projects/organizations that may interest you. Good luck.

When Potential Alpha Kappa Alpha are online, Does everyone cross over?
Q. I've notice when looking at my school Alpha Kappa Alpha,INC Chapter there are usually a large amount of girls online and at probate shows, but when you review the members info for that line there are about half of the ladies names listed. My question is, During the "come out" shows are all of the ladies new memebrs? Or is there a mixture of new and old members to disguise the new members until reveiling time. How does that process of being "online" and the probate show work?
Asked by Failure is not an option - Mon Aug 20 01:23:40 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There is no 'on-line' that term is associated with pledging which was banned by the NPHC in 1990. There is an official Membership Intake Process (MIP) that candidates participate in after official notification from The Sorority. The presentations that you speak of are coordinated by the chapter at that particular campus therefore they organize how that show is done. There may be a nixture of new Sorors and old Sorors, it is at that chapter discretion.

Q. I have expressed my interests to a couple members of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc. on my campus. I am familiar with the other girls, but I do not know them personally. I am unsure how to approach them and express my sincere interest. There are also other girls that have expressed their interests to all of the girls. How do I stand out amongst several other young women all striving to be apart of this illustrious organization? I also plan to compete in the Miss AKAdemic pageant, which I hope will really show my interest to these ladies.

A. The best way to stand out is to be active on your campus so my sorors can see you. Community service is key to becoming a member of AKA. Also, don't feel the need to tell every soror that you are interested. Pick one or two members. Don't worry. . .it will get around. Also, attend any open events that they have and ask to participate, if possible. Hope this helps.

can someone tell me about the alpha kappa alpha sorority?
Q. I attend Morgan State and I just wanted to find out if the chapter here, or anywhere else for that matter, does it really hold up the standards that are claimed on the nations website? I also wanted to know if the induction is a mean and demeaning as rumors claim? It would be a great help if only members of alpha kappa alpha sorority would answer, I really don't care what chapter you are part of, I just want real information. Thanks in advance.

A. I think that the best way to find the answer to your question is to look at Alpha Kappa Alpha women in your community and in the world. There is no one person who can answer that question for you- rather the impact and global positioning of all members rs of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. address your concern. The question Then becomes, Do You possess the necessary qualities and aspirations to uphold The bar which we have set upon a plateau? As Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. approaches its 100th year of Sisterhood and Service we continue to trail-blaze and appreciate your interest. *NOTE* It is best to focus on your goal uninterrupted by rumors and nay sayers, for their ignorance is crippling. As a student at Morgan State University,… [cont.]

Expressing Interest in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc?
Q. Hi, I am a student at the top HBCU and I am very interested in joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. All of my life I have been told to be discreet and to not tell anyone that you want to join. At my school, the Members want you to set up a meeting with them and express interest formally. Should I do this? Or is this a bad idea?

A. I assume that since you said you are "a student at the top HBCU," you must be at Hampton!!! Any place else is only second best. :-) What the members are asking you to do TOTALLY violates our current procedure for membership intake and is inappropiate activity...and they know it! No matter how innocent it seems, it's hazing! In fact, the Sorority's website states "MIP [Membership Intake Process] activities in the name of the Sorority prior to Rush are prohibited." The Rush is where you will formally make your desire for membership known, not in privately orchestrated meetings! The Undergraduate Membership Interest form states, "Hazing may include, but is not limited to: attending unauthorized rush meetings or sessions; removing… [cont.]

Is there an age limit to be part of the Alpha Kappa Alpha organization as an undergraduate?
Q. I a junior in college and am 29 years of age. I would really like to be involved with the Alpha Kappa Alpha organization but I am a bit nervous because of my age. I appreciate any good advice. Thank you.

A. There is certainly no age limit. YOU may personally want to consider waiting, however. If your school has many 'non traditional' students (employed full-time, married, single parents, over age 23, etc.) then it is likely that the chapter does as well. If the majority of the chapter members or students at your college are younger, it may be preferable for you to become a member of a chapter after you graduate. If you are 29 then you are aware of the differences between 19- and 20- year-olds and yourself. Your priorities and responsibilities will likely be different. The types of activities that you wish to participate in may be different. Members of a graduate chapter will range from those immediately out of college to those who have… [cont.]

How much should your school's ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA, INCORPORATED affect your membership interest?
Q. After doing my research about the organization of my choice, I have come to realize that the ladies on my campus that represent them do NOT do them any justice. They have gone FAR from what the founding values are...some as simple as volunteering!!! I have always known that I wanted to be apart of alpha kappa alpha, incorporated but I am not sure if I would like to be a member of my school's chapter. I have tried to think that maybe I could be the one to make a difference...but Im not sure how that would work out b/c there might be seniority issues. Have any of you ladies or gentlemen, that are part of a Greek organization, felt this way? What helped you decided? Please help... THANKS!!!

A. As a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, I must say that I know what you are going through. When I was seeking membership, it didn't seem that the girls in my chapter where holding Alpha Kappa Alpha in the esteem that I thought it should be held. However, if Alpha Kappa Alpha is something that you know you really want to do, I suggest that you TRY to become the change you want to see. We can't complain about things we don't strive to change. But, if the chapter there isn't something you want to be a part of, then there is always graduate admission. I truly believe that if you want something bad enough, there is always a way to get it. In the end, you have to make the choice and decide if AKA is right for YOU.
