How will I go about getting an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. sponsor?
Q. As I am doing my research on Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. I was wondering what was a sponsor and how do you go about getting one? Does the sponsor have to be a member of the sorority? Could it be the same person that writes your recommendation letter? Would I need a sponsor? I would greatly appreciate any feed back. I am extremely interested in Alpha Kappa Alpha and am trying to learn as much information as possible about the sorority without being a member. Once again all answers are appreciated.

A. A sponsor has to be a financially active member of the sorority. If you are seeking membership in a graduate chapter then yes you would need to sponsor. A sponsor is someone who knows you and thinks you would be an excellent addition to our sorority.

A. You have to have one semester of college completed. The best advice is to check with Georgia State to see what they're requirements are as far as joining a Greek Organization.

Q. If there s not a Local Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Graduate chapter in my area, should I approach a current member about joining? I current have a 4.0 GPA.

A. If there is no chapter in your area, go to the national website to find the chapter closest to you. You show your interest by attending events open to the public. If they don't have a website or if they do and it's not updated, you can find out about events by checking the newspaper, radio, word of mouth or fliers posted in shopping areas or community centers.

What should a letter of interest to a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc entail?
Q. How should I format the letter so that I can make it straight-forward yet detailed? What details about myself or the sorority do I have to include? Is it ok if I write them a letter of interest via facebook? If any members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. help me with this I would be greatly appreciated. Respectfully, RegalVirtuous
Asked by regalvirtuous09 - Sat Apr 19 13:50:22 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. 1. The letter should be one page in length. 2. It should tell us why, specifically, you believe that you should be offered membership. 3. It should tell us what you have to offer the sorority. 4. It should give us an explanation as to why you want to be a member of our sorority. 5. You can leave out some of the more obvious things, like what school u attend. 6. You should approach writing it like you are in an interview; think of some of the questions that would matter to the the interviewer (above mentioned points) and answer them in the letter. 7. The letter should open you up to the chapter members. I wouldn't suggest sending an interest letter over the internet. You include it your application.

Expressing Interest in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc?
Q. Hi, I am a student at the top HBCU and I am very interested in joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. All of my life I have been told to be discreet and to not tell anyone that you want to join. At my school, the Members want you to set up a meeting with them and express interest formally. Should I do this? Or is this a bad idea?

A. I assume that since you said you are "a student at the top HBCU," you must be at Hampton!!! Any place else is only second best. :-) What the members are asking you to do TOTALLY violates our current procedure for membership intake and is inappropiate activity...and they know it! No matter how innocent it seems, it's hazing! In fact, the Sorority's website states "MIP [Membership Intake Process] activities in the name of the Sorority prior to Rush are prohibited." The Rush is where you will formally make your desire for membership known, not in privately orchestrated meetings! The Undergraduate Membership Interest form states, "Hazing may include, but is not limited to: attending unauthorized rush meetings or sessions; removing… [cont.]

Would joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority my senior year (undergrad) be looked down upon?
Q. Most prospective members of sororities/fraternities pledge their sophomore and junior years of undergrad. Would there be a lessened chance of the members accepting my membership into their sorority if I am classified as a senior? I would prefer members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. to respond. Thank You!

A. Angel, this is a good question that I think a lot of people have, so thank you for asking. When I was an undergraduate, we wanted to know why seniors waited so long to apply for membership. You may want to answer this question in your letter. Where I come from, chapters are small and freshmen and sophomores had the chance to experience neodom and then spend a few years solidly contributing to the chapter. Chapter members will essentially be making a grad soror if you come in in the spring and graduate a month or two later. They will not benefit from your gifts and talents. That said, while they probably wouldn't bring you in by yourself (too much for too little), putting you on a line with other people would be no "skin off their teeth." [cont.]

For Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Members Only?
Q. Does receiving an acceptance letter from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incoorporated means you became a member, or is it the next step in the Membership Intake Process. I have heard many rumors stating that horrible things happen to individuals that pledge.

A. A letter of acceptance or invitation by no means indicates that one is an official member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. One has to complete the Membership Intake Process prior to becoming a member of the sorority. Please note that pledging is not part of the membership intake process. Any hazing activities should be reported to a graduate advisor at the University or the corporate office.

I Love What Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority stand for and does in the community! Just a Question?
Q. I have been attending some events given by the local Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority in my state for some time. It's crunch time and I was advised that the ladies really think I could be an asset to this great organization (Thank God!) The issue is that I come from a long line of ladies that are active in another sorority. During my undergrad years they constantly stressed me becoming a part of their organization. I decided to attend rush and turn in paper work. As an adult my choice never changed, will this affect my being approved for Alpha Kappa Alpha? Sometimes its easier to tell someone they should have thought long and hard about their choice, it's sometimes hard for a teenager to think clearly with strong family influence. As an… [cont.]

A. If you did not participate in the actual membership process of the other sorority, then you are eligible for membership into Alpha Kappa Alpha. Really, it depends on whether or not some AKAs from your school are in the chapter you are pursuing now because there could be a backlash . . . there are so many factors. Regardless, I don't think you should give up on your desire to be an Alpha Kappa Alpha lady. During the graduate process for Alpha Kappa Alpha, you must be invited to participate in membership intake. Please review our website for more clarification: www.aka1908.org : Graduate Membership Requirements: * Completion of at least a baccalaureate degree with a cumulative average of at least C+ or a graduate degree from an… [cont.]

How do I know if I will have enough community service hours to be considered for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority?
Q. I have only been doing community service for a couple of months. I've heard people say that they look for community service at least for a year, 100 hours, 200 hours, etc. Does it matter the time span that you've been doing them, or the amount of hours that you have?

A. You are not required to have a specific number of hours to join the sorority. You are required to complete an evidence of community/campus involvement form & you can submit up to 3 of those forms. It may help you if you think about if you were a member. How many hours would you want somone to have if they wanted to join your organization? I hope this helps you.. I am not a member by the way but I have been giving this information from members.

Graduating from DeVry University, will Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Grad chapter accept degree?
Q. Does the Bachelors Degree have to be from an accredited university? I ask this because an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Grad Advisor at a university told me I could not become a member of an undergrad chapter because DeVry is not an accredited university.

A. Yes, your degree would have to be from an accredited university in order to become a member both on the undergraduate or graduate level. If you go to grad school and complete your advanced degree from and accredited school you may be able to apply for membership at that time. Good Luck in your pursuits!
