How to properly contact graduate chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated?
Q. I recently tried contacting a graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated for dates on sponsored community service events? I hoping to meet members and get involved( where applicable) and support the organization. Unfortunately, no one contacted me back. Did I do something wrong or ? I wanted to join during undergrad but graduated before another line was formed.
Asked by Inquisitive - Thu Mar 26 19:44:28 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Graduate membership is by invitation only, and many chapters do not respond to solicitations. I would not recommend attempting to contact them again since you did not receive a response the first time. If the chapter has a website, visit it for a list of upcoming events that are open to the public. Members are everywhere. You may know one at work, at school, or in other social settings that you frequent. The best you can do is to continue to check for events, and be yourself. If you have any friends from undergrad who are members, they may also be able to give you information about programs.

Q. If there s not a Local Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Graduate chapter in my area, should I approach a current member about joining? I current have a 4.0 GPA.

A. If there is no chapter in your area, go to the national website to find the chapter closest to you. You show your interest by attending events open to the public. If they don't have a website or if they do and it's not updated, you can find out about events by checking the newspaper, radio, word of mouth or fliers posted in shopping areas or community centers.

Expressing Interest in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc?
Q. Hi, I am a student at the top HBCU and I am very interested in joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. All of my life I have been told to be discreet and to not tell anyone that you want to join. At my school, the Members want you to set up a meeting with them and express interest formally. Should I do this? Or is this a bad idea?

A. I assume that since you said you are "a student at the top HBCU," you must be at Hampton!!! Any place else is only second best. :-) What the members are asking you to do TOTALLY violates our current procedure for membership intake and is inappropiate activity...and they know it! No matter how innocent it seems, it's hazing! In fact, the Sorority's website states "MIP [Membership Intake Process] activities in the name of the Sorority prior to Rush are prohibited." The Rush is where you will formally make your desire for membership known, not in privately orchestrated meetings! The Undergraduate Membership Interest form states, "Hazing may include, but is not limited to: attending unauthorized rush meetings or sessions; removing… [cont.]

can someone tell me about the alpha kappa alpha sorority?
Q. I attend Morgan State and I just wanted to find out if the chapter here, or anywhere else for that matter, does it really hold up the standards that are claimed on the nations website? I also wanted to know if the induction is a mean and demeaning as rumors claim? It would be a great help if only members of alpha kappa alpha sorority would answer, I really don't care what chapter you are part of, I just want real information. Thanks in advance.

A. I think that the best way to find the answer to your question is to look at Alpha Kappa Alpha women in your community and in the world. There is no one person who can answer that question for you- rather the impact and global positioning of all members rs of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. address your concern. The question Then becomes, Do You possess the necessary qualities and aspirations to uphold The bar which we have set upon a plateau? As Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. approaches its 100th year of Sisterhood and Service we continue to trail-blaze and appreciate your interest. *NOTE* It is best to focus on your goal uninterrupted by rumors and nay sayers, for their ignorance is crippling. How do I join Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority while an undergrad, when school doesn't have an active chapter?
Q. My school currently doesn't have an undergraduate chapter for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (suspension) and was wondering if there is anyway to join another chapter while being an undergraduate? I have been very interested in joining, and was communicating with our current chapter recently when they were put on suspension. I really want to join as an undergraduate, is there any other way for me to that? Thanks!

A. Dear aspirant, I apologize, but there isn't a way for you to join Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. if your school's chapter is currently under suspension (inactive). Hopefully, they won't be under suspension for a long time. Q. Is there another method for me to become a member of the Sorority if I attend a college/university that has an inactive chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority? A. No. If your campus chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is inactive, it is not possible for you to become a member of the Sorority at this time.

For Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Members Only?
Q. Does receiving an acceptance letter from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incoorporated means you became a member, or is it the next step in the Membership Intake Process. I have heard many rumors stating that horrible things happen to individuals that pledge.
Asked by Mizz - Sat Feb 27 01:13:00 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. A letter of acceptance or invitation by no means indicates that one is an official member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. One has to complete the Membership Intake Process prior to becoming a member of the sorority. Please note that pledging is not part of the membership intake process. Any hazing activities should be reported to a graduate advisor at the University or the corporate office.

Is it possible to join the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in graduate school?
Q. Hi, I have always wanted to join this prestigious sorority because of all the philanthropy that the sorority does. I am currently a First Year Law Student in the UK, and realise that the Greek System is not used over. I just want to find out if it would be possible for me to become a member after Law School, and during my further studies back in the US. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you.

A. Yes, but membership in a graduate AKA chapter is by invitation only. If you are interested I would suggest getting to know active (very important) members in the area on an individual basis. It may take a while but there is no open process in graduate school. You will need to find a local graduate chapter. www.aka1908.com .

A. You've research all the info that you need for an inspirant. Here's a little more info you could use for the interest meeting: What should be in an interest letter: 1. The letter should be one page in length. 2. It should tell us why, specifically, you believe that you should be offered membership. 3. It should tell us what you have to offer the sorority. 4. It should give us an explaination as to why you want to be a member of our sorority. 5. You can leave out some of the more obvious things, like what school u attend. 6. You should approach writing it like you are in an interview; think of some of the questions that would matter to the the interviewer (above mentioned points) and answer them in the letter. 7. A. Hello! No, Alpha Kappa Alpha does not have any auxiliary organization. Actually, no group has an auxiliary org. In the past, some groups did, but with all of the ambiguous behavior between big brother/little sister groups or big sister/little brother groups -- those groups were abolished a long time ago. The Alpha Angels are now AAI (Alpha Angels Incorporated). I don't know what the Omega Gems, Kappa Kourt or Sigma (Doves -???) are separate entities (but I believe Kappa Kourt is now KKI. Some graduate chapters do have groups of high school aged girls that they mentor (I was in one of these groups -- long ago). My group did not have a name and we were in no way connected with the sorority. I hope this answers your question. Best regards, [cont.]

A. Alpha Kappa Alpha requires a cumulative GPA of C+, so all your grades will be averaged together. Your GPA and status from the semester immediately prior to your application for membership must also be a minimum C+/ full-time status. Keep in mind that your university may also have a requirement for GPA and credits earned.

How many community service hours did you have when seeking membership into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.?
Q. What would be the minimum amount of hours you would accept from a prospective?

A. If you're seeking to do minimums, you need to look for another organization. Please refer to the website and current members that you already know and trust. That's the best way to learn the answers to this and surely many other questions that you have. Above all, be discreet if you're serious.

What's the best way to sow interest in an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. graduate chapter?
Q. I know that I should attend the events open to the public, but do I ever verbally tell the women I'm interested? Also, how often do graduate chapters initiate new members? There is no rush with graduate chapters or a graduate advisor for graduate prospects. Yes, what happens if they don't host many events? Also, do i need to have a sponsor?

A. Your interest will be apparent by your attendance at events.
