A. Dear Interested Applicant, There are a few things that I must tell you before answering your question. Primarily, ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha are not your Sorors until you have been initiated into our Sisterhood. I do not want to appear snobbish; however, it is offensive to be addressed as a member of our organization when you are not. In the future, please refer to ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha as members and not as Sorors because that would not aid you in becoming a member of our organization (but I honestly think any of the other Sororities would find it offensive as well). In regards to your questions: Each individual chapter decides the time for their rushes; therefore, you will need to look out for any flyers or posters denoting the… [cont.]

Q. I too have questions about becoming a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha. I completed my undergraduate degree and I know I would be an excellent asset to the sorority. I have a great career with a wonderful company. Also, I am heavily involved in the community. While I was in college I wasn't ready but I always new Alpha Kappa Alpha was the sorority for me. Now that I have been out of college for over 15 years I realized that my GPA was a 2.3. Let me know if my GPA is to low for consideration.

Expressing Interest in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc?
Q. Hi, I am a student at the top HBCU and I am very interested in joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. All of my life I have been told to be discreet and to not tell anyone that you want to join. At my school, the Members want you to set up a meeting with them and express interest formally. Should I do this? Or is this a bad idea?

A. I assume that since you said you are "a student at the top HBCU," you must be at Hampton!!! Any place else is only second best. :-) What the members are asking you to do TOTALLY violates our current procedure for membership intake and is inappropiate activity...and they know it! No matter how innocent it seems, it's hazing! In fact, the Sorority's website states "MIP [Membership Intake Process] activities in the name of the Sorority prior to Rush are prohibited." The Rush is where you will formally make your desire for membership known, not in privately orchestrated meetings! The Undergraduate Membership Interest form states, "Hazing may include, but is not limited to: attending unauthorized rush meetings or sessions; removing… [cont.]

can someone tell me about the alpha kappa alpha sorority?
Q. I attend Morgan State and I just wanted to find out if the chapter here, or anywhere else for that matter, does it really hold up the standards that are claimed on the nations website? I also wanted to know if the induction is a mean and demeaning as rumors claim? It would be a great help if only members of alpha kappa alpha sorority would answer, I really don't care what chapter you are part of, I just want real information. Thanks in advance.

There is no one person who can answer that question for you- rather the impact and global positioning of all members rs of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. address your concern. Is it possible to join the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in graduate school?
Q. Hi, I have always wanted to join this prestigious sorority because of all the philanthropy that the sorority does. I am currently a First Year Law Student in the UK, and realise that the Greek System is not used over. I just want to find out if it would be possible for me to become a member after Law School, and during my further studies back in the US. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you.

A. Yes, but membership in a graduate AKA chapter is by invitation only. If you are interested I would suggest getting to know active (very important) members in the area on an individual basis. It may take a while but there is no open process in graduate school. You will need to find a local graduate chapter. www.aka1908.com .

Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc. how to I stand out amongst the other expressed interests?
Q. I have expressed my interests to a couple members of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc. on my campus. I am familiar with the other girls, but I do not know them personally. I am unsure how to approach them and express my sincere interest. There are also other girls that have expressed their interests to all of the girls. How do I stand out amongst several other young women all striving to be apart of this illustrious organization? I also plan to compete in the Miss AKAdemic pageant, which I hope will really show my interest to these ladies.

A. The best way to stand out is to be active on your campus so my sorors can see you. Community service is key to becoming a member of AKA. Also, don't feel the need to tell every soror that you are interested. Pick one or two members. Don't worry. . .it will get around. Also, attend any open events that they have and ask to participate, if possible. Hope this helps.

Is It ok to write a letter of interest to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority prior to an interest meeting or rush?
Q. To any member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, i just needed a few sound suggestions in regards to the appropriateness of writing a letter before an interest meeting or rush even take place. I go to school where there is not a chapter on the campus, but there is a city wide chapter. Also, most of the members attend another school that is apart of the city chapter.
Asked by Angelchic11 - Sat Feb 14 16:49:05 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There's nothing wrong with getting a head start on a letter. Appropriateness comes into question depending on what you plan to do with the letter once it's complete. If you plan to send it to the president of the city-wide chapter, that should be fine. However, understand that you may or may not receive a response. If you do not receive a response, I would find it inappropriate to continue to attempt to contact the chapter. Once you have made contact, they have your information and will contact you if they are able to assist you.

How do I know if I will have enough community service hours to be considered for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority?
Q. I have only been doing community service for a couple of months. I've heard people say that they look for community service at least for a year, 100 hours, 200 hours, etc. Does it matter the time span that you've been doing them, or the amount of hours that you have?

A. You are not required to have a specific number of hours to join the sorority. You are required to complete an evidence of community/campus involvement form & you can submit up to 3 of those forms. It may help you if you think about if you were a member. How many hours would you want somone to have if they wanted to join your organization? I hope this helps you.. I am not a member by the way but I have been giving this information from members.

Q. My school currently doesn't have an undergraduate chapter for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (suspension) and was wondering if there is anyway to join another chapter while being an undergraduate? I really want to join as an undergraduate, is there any other way for me to that? Thanks!

A. Dear aspirant, I apologize, but there isn't a way for you to join Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. if your school's chapter is currently under suspension (inactive). Hopefully, they won't be under suspension for a long time. Q. Is there another method for me to become a member of the Sorority if I attend a college/university that has an inactive chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority? A. No. If your campus chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is inactive, it is not possible for you to become a member of the Sorority at this time.

Do Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority look at your Institutional GPA or overall GPA if you are a transfer student?
Q. I transfered schools and it has been a big debate among friends whether or not AKAs look at just your GPA of the school in which you are applying for membership or does your 2.5 GPA has to come from your overall GPA of the two school?

A. Alpha Kappa Alpha requires a cumulative GPA of C+, so all your grades will be averaged together. Your GPA and status from the semester immediately prior to your application for membership must also be a minimum C+/ full-time status. Keep in mind that your university may also have a requirement for GPA and credits earned.

I Love What Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority stand for and does in the community! Just a Question?
Q. I have been attending some events given by the local Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority in my state for some time. It's crunch time and I was advised that the ladies really think I could be an asset to this great organization (Thank God!) The issue is that I come from a long line of ladies that are active in another sorority. During my undergrad years they constantly stressed me becoming a part of their organization. I decided to attend rush and turn in paper work. As an adult my choice never changed, will this affect my being approved for Alpha Kappa Alpha? Sometimes its easier to tell someone they should have thought long and hard about their choice, it's sometimes hard for a teenager to think clearly with strong family influence. As an… [cont.]

A. If you did not participate in the actual membership process of the other sorority, then you are eligible for membership into Alpha Kappa Alpha. Really, it depends on whether or not some AKAs from your school are in the chapter you are pursuing now because there could be a backlash . . . there are so many factors. Regardless, I don't think you should give up on your desire to be an Alpha Kappa Alpha lady. During the graduate process for Alpha Kappa Alpha, you must be invited to participate in membership intake.

A. Good evening, Initiating this conversation can seem to be very difficult as you have no idea what to expect from the member that you speak with. One thing you will hear a great deal is discretion is key! One of the reasons for that is to minimize the likelihood that you can end up being hazed. As I am pretty sure that your reason for wanting to initiate conversation is to get information with regard to chapter events, Rush and so on. Here is my suggestion: First, I would speak with the graduate advisor for the chapter you are interested in. Introduce yourself to her and just ask if the chapter is having any events soon which are open to the public. Take note of them and attend them. I also suggest that you look on yahoo groups… [cont.]

A. This is a difficult question. While it is possible to become a member, it can certainly be difficult. My advice is to be honest about it. If it is something you truly regret and you have made amends by changing your lifestyle it should be obvious by observing the activities you're involved in, the people you associate with and the way you carry yourself. Are you referring to a graduate or undergraduate chapter? This can make a difference because graduate chapters require sponsorship by someone who really knows you and they can go to bat for you. For an undergraduate chapter you would have to know many of the members and they would have to know you pretty well in order for this to be completely overlooked. If you are an undergrad,… [cont.]

A. You've research all the info that you need for an inspirant. Here's a little more info you could use for the interest meeting: What should be in an interest letter: 1. The letter should be one page in length. 2. It should tell us why, specifically, you believe that you should be offered membership. 3. It should tell us what you have to offer the sorority. 4. It should give us an explaination as to why you want to be a member of our sorority. 5. You can leave out some of the more obvious things, like what school u attend. 6. You should approach writing it like you are in an interview; think of some of the questions that would matter to the the interviewer (above mentioned points) and answer them in the letter. 7. The letter should open… [cont.]
