What do i need to do before seeking membership in a graduate chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority?
Q. I am entering my senior year at an HBCU. The DST chapter at my school is suspended until 2011. I have decided to join a graduate chapter when i graduate next year. I want to know what i have to do to prepare myself for membership into the organization. What are the requirements? What will make me a better candidate for membership? Thanks ;)

A. Besides the obvious things (2.5 GPA, Community Service, getting involved with the local chapter), the best advice I can give you is to be patient. I just pledged my first Alumnae line this year, and before them, the last line crossed back in 1997. Alumnae chapters may not have a line every year, so if they don't have a line after you graduate, don't lose hope. Take the time to get involved in your community and any events the local chapter may be hosting. The more you put yourself out there for them to see you, the better your chances will be. Make sure they see who you are and get to know you, because RUSH on the Alumnae level is not broadcast everywhere; it is done by invitation. Don't stalk them though! lol

A. As someone who has worked in the fraternity/sorority arena at universities, maybe I can help answer your question. Although I am not 100% knowledgeable about sorority membership costs and dues, I know that the reason why the cost is fairly steep ($1000 to $1500) is to cover your membership since you'd be entering at the graduate level. Unfortunately, it doesn't pay for any shiny necklaces or plaques or anything, only your membership. I had one gentleman with the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity tell me that graduate chapters charge more since you enter later than at the undergraduate level. It is also a way to weed out the serious contenders for membership from the pretenders. Having been exposed to the Greek organizations both at a… [cont.]

How do I show interest in the Zeta Phi Beta graduate chapter in my area (Bear, Delaware)?
Q. I will be graduating in May and I have always wanted to pledge Zeta. I am considering Graduate Chapter. But I don't know how ti go about. I emailed the chapter in my area expressing my interest now how do i find out about the events that they have? She also did not respond to my e-mail. Does that mean they are not interested? My mother is a Zeta does that mean I will automatically be accepted? I live in Bear, Delaware so if anyone has any information that would be great

A. Well, I'm not a Zeta . . . but I went to their website: I suggest that you contact their International Headquarters for more specific interest: IHQ@ZPhiB1920.org On the National website, they also listed state directors: Please, don't take it personally that they haven't responded to you at this time. I'm sure they are very busy and will get to your email; however, I would suggest emailing the State Director.

A. You do not need to be in Graduate school in order to obtain membership into the sorority. You need to have completed your bachelors degree from an accredited university with a C+ average. If you did not finish your bachelors with a C+ average, then you will need to have completed your masters from and accredited university in order to obtain membership. I am not sure if the University of Phoenix applies you would need to find out this information on your own. Graduate membership is by invitation only, so you will need to find what chapters are located in your area. Try to attend as many events as possible to get to know the Sorors in your area. Also, it is important to be active in the community, you never know when you might run… [cont.]

Asked by Chichi LaRoix - Thu Feb 7 06:31:19 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hello there, Firstly, is the chapter in your community having intake this spring? Sometimes if they are an announcement will be posted on their website. Do you know any members of the chapter near you? This is probably the best way to meet the sorors and in turn find out about an upcoming rush/informational. Be sure that you have lots of community service and try to attend some of the events held by the chapter that are open to the public. I assume that you have graduated from a 4 year accredited college with a GPA of 2.5 or better. Remember , our motto is Sisterhood, Service and Scholarship so we want women in our organization that have all of these qualities. Hope this helps!

A. Alpha Kappa Alpha no longer pledge. Aspirants go through the MIP. It won't be easy getting into the grad chapter since it's by invitation only. If you know 4 members, then they will be able to tell you when the grad chapter has community service open to the public. Just make sure you continue to do community service.

I've contacted chapters for information about public events, as well as checked calendars that are open to the public. Needless to say, there are none. A. I too am on the same quest that you are. The advice I have received and that has worked out for me is to actually ask a member of the graduate chapter you are trying to gain membership into. You would be surprised how many people that you know are members and you have no idea. I had a mentor that I had known for several years and I had no idea she was a member until she had an Alpha Kappa Alpha shirt on one day. That is the best route I have seen and has been the most successful for me.

Graduate Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.?
Q. Hello. I am currently in a position of awe. With only one semester left before graduation, I am still not affiliated with my university's undergraduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha. I have yet to question whether or not it is right for me, however my drive is dwindling down due to lack of opportunity. My question is this. Do you have to be in graduate school to be in the graduate chapter, or must you just have a bachelor's degree? Also, how often to graduate chapters take in new members?

Yolanda, please understand that members find it disrespectful for non-members to claim membership. Also, the internet is not so anonymous. A. Hi, after checking out the AKA's national website, it looks like they only have one Graduate Chapter in Houston (Xi Alpha Omega). YOU will have to reach out to them. Find out if they are throwing any activities. They may be sponsoring an event soon MLK day is coming up and that is a big thing. Find out what events they are hosting and get to know some of them. The chapter is active so you should be able to find something if you look hard enough. Once you get familiar and comfortable with someone of the chapter, let them know you are interested. But you will have to find them. There will be no sign saying come join Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Keep your eyes open and Good Luck to you!!

A. Good evening, According to our International Headquarters, the minimum GPA that one can have to be eligible for membership is a 2.5. While a 2.59 qualifies you in that aspect, there are several other things that I would recommend to strengthen your candidacy. Also, memebership on the graduate level may NOT be solicited, it is granted by invitation only! So again, it is my very strong recommendation that you focus on some of the other things that would contribute towards making you a stronger candidate. Also, I implore you to keep in mind that even doing the things that I or any other Soror may be able to recommend to you in NO WAY guarantees that an invitation to membership will be granted to you, but I will say that I am of the… [cont.]

A. As a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, I became a member of this sorority at 22... you will have no problems if you are genuine, and have something to offer the sorority regardless of age. Remember: graduate chapters are by invitation only so you MUST know a member of the chapter of interest in order to be chose at the graduate level. Info is hard to come by, so my advice is to start attending events. Your attendance will automatically state your interest in the chapter. be patient. It may take you months, even YEARS to make the connections with my sorors. You CAN do it. Work on being the best "you" you can be in the meantime, and before you know it, you will get the letter of a lifetime :)

A. Initially Xi Omega was the first chapter in D.C and the area just expanded to three chapters. Rho Mu Omega being the last one in 1988, which is my chapter. Xi Zeta Omega is the other chapter. We work together on many projects and are not as separate as it seems. You can check out the websites and/or attend functions just to see which chapter fits you best. Each chapter all over the world is different, but we don't profess that one is better than the other. The D.C. area is a very big area and Sorors join the chapter that they are most comfortable with. Feel free to visit www.rhomuomega.org to check out my chapter in particular.

Q. I am very interested in becoming a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated upon going to school out of state and returning home, it has been hard to locate chapters in my area though I have made contact with a few, they are not having an intake process for about 4 years. Though I don't mind the wait I would like to find a chapter that is open (meaning accepting and warm), active and positive. I have wanted to be a member since I was a little girl, there are no members in my family; I would like to be the first to start a phenomenal legacy. Alpha Kappa Alpha Graduate Chapter I need some hope people?
Q. Why is it sooo hard to join a graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Graduate chapter? I have been trying since late 2006 and nothing yet. I have been attending events and sending emails but I just keep getting invites for event but no "ins" with anyone in the chapter. I feel like you have to put on heirs to even be invited into this organization. I have been wanting to join this sorority since I was a child but it seems as if they are not having it! Unfortunately when I was in college, the whole drama went down with hazing so I was unable to apply. So right now I feel so defeated but I will continue fighting. any advice?
Asked by Shanel - Tue Dec 2 23:28:13 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First, the graduate chapters don't accept new members every year as an undergraduate chapter might. It can be years in between. They are probably very aware of who you are, but if they have not decided to let new members in, there is not much you can do. I am not sure what you mean by "ins" with anyone as the members cannot really share certain information with you other than events that are open to the public. As for putting on "heirs" (should be airs, smile), that should be the last thing. Be yourself because if you are not it will come out and that's not good either.

I also have been thinking about going to grad school, but since i have a small baby its so much harder to start. I have attended some of the events the graduate chapter in my area have but not many. I just started doing community service. Does this mean I will never have networking opportunities? My girlfriends from undergrad all pledged undergrad. What will they think if I pledge graduate? Joining an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Graduate Chapter?
Q. Here's my concern, I initially sought membership as a junior while in undergrad and unfortunately I was not extended an invitation to join due to the fact, I believe, because I didn't get alone with a few of the girls. For the most part I bonded with many and I've always been very respectful but I will not allow ANYONE to disrepect me, my family, or my friends, while I'm standing there. A. I would not let anyone deter you from obtaining your goal. The key is to be the type of individual the graduate chapter would like to extend an invitation to-that is someone doing community service, attending the grad chapter's programs ,and getting to know some of the graduate members. There may be someone you know through friends or family members, church members, etc. that may know one of the graduate members who may be willing to put in a good word for you. A. I think that you would have to transfer to another school and pledge. I know a boy that went to summer school at another school and they had a summer line. He made the line and then came back to our school in the fall. You can always do that. Do some research about nearby schools or schools in your hometown. Since you will be from a different chapter than the one on your campus, I am pretty sure that you will be able to wear your letters because usually you cant if your chapter is suspended on campus. Grad chapter is okay but undergrad is way better. Good Luck. -red-
