AKA Sorority: What is included in the graduate chapter membership cost?
Q. I heard that the graduate chapter membership cost can range from $1000 to $1500, depending on the size of the chapter. What does this cost pay for or what is included in the cost?

A. As someone who has worked in the fraternity/sorority arena at universities, maybe I can help answer your question. Although I am not 100% knowledgeable about sorority membership costs and dues, I know that the reason why the cost is fairly steep ($1000 to $1500) is to cover your membership since you'd be entering at the graduate level. Unfortunately, it doesn't pay for any shiny necklaces or plaques or anything, only your membership. I had one gentleman with the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity tell me that graduate chapters charge more since you enter later than at the undergraduate level. It is also a way to weed out the serious contenders for membership from the pretenders. Having been exposed to the Greek organizations both at a… [cont.]

What do i need to do before seeking membership in a graduate chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority?
Q. I am entering my senior year at an HBCU. The DST chapter at my school is suspended until 2011. I have decided to join a graduate chapter when i graduate next year. I want to know what i have to do to prepare myself for membership into the organization. What are the requirements? What will make me a better candidate for membership? Thanks ;)

A. Besides the obvious things (2.5 GPA, Community Service, getting involved with the local chapter), the best advice I can give you is to be patient. I just pledged my first Alumnae line this year, and before them, the last line crossed back in 1997. Alumnae chapters may not have a line every year, so if they don't have a line after you graduate, don't lose hope. Take the time to get involved in your community and any events the local chapter may be hosting. The more you put yourself out there for them to see you, the better your chances will be. Make sure they see who you are and get to know you, because RUSH on the Alumnae level is not broadcast everywhere; it is done by invitation. Don't stalk them though! lol

Alpha Kappa Alpha Graduate Membership?
Q. I would like to know if it is possible to be currently enrolled in Graduate school and pursue or obtain membership with AKA? My graduate gpa is higher than my undergraduate gpa and I wanted to know whether members would accept my graduate transcript? Also would the same rules apply as with undergrad (Full time prior and current semester)? Thank you for your help.
Asked by prized possession - Fri Nov 6 14:36:13 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I am a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, and if you do not have a Master's degree, then your grade point average from your undergraduate transcript will be needed to determine if you meet the GPA requirements. This applies even if you are in graduate school. Only when you have earned a Master's degree or higher, is when your GPA is not evaluated. Hope this helps.

Can I pursue graduate membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha?
Q. I graduated from college with barely a 2.4, however I am currently enrolled in a graduate degree program that I will complete in two years. I know that on the national website it states you must either have a 2.5 OR have a graduate degree. If I am currently pursuing a grad degree, will I meet the requirement in spite of my low gpa or do I have to have completed it already? I know that graduate membership is by invite only. To clarify, when I say can I pursue membership, what I am talking about are all of the steps one takes to increase their chances of being extended an invitation to join.

A. I am not a member but I know you will have to have earned your masters degree so your undergrad grade point average won't affect your chances at becoming a member. May I invite you to join akawannabes, a yahoo group that is designed to assist interested ladies in our pursuits in becoming members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. I know that there is some negative perspectives regarding certain groups on Yahoo but I am the owner of this group and I work hard to keep the content of the group positive. In this group there is a frequently asked questions section, and a "dos and don'ts" section as well. I believe that this group will be very beneficial to you with your pursuits. To join go Yahoo groups and type in akawannbes to join.Good luck… [cont.]

A. I do not know exactly what you mean by 'it looks better', but if you have an opportunity to persue membership while on the undergraduate level I would take it. If you want to take your chances to wait until Graduate Chapter then by all means wait. I have suggested that one of my friends wait because I felt that she was not ready. She had a lot of other things on her plate and adding a Sorority at the time would overwhelm her if she had been granted membership. Figure out if you have time for The Sorority at the time. Weigh your options. Only after you have done all of that will you be able to answer that question for YOURSELF. Good luck!

Q. Can someone help me. I have always wanted to be a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Now that i have graduate college I know that membership is invitation only. I do not know where to get started because the chapters in my area either dont have a website, or are hard to get in contact with. I really would like to attend events etc. If there are any members out there that can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A. Where are you from? Sometimes asking people who are in other organizations can be helpful; of course you can't make it obvious but they may very well know what is happening. If there are any undergraduate chapters where you are then there is a graduate chapter that is guiding them somewhere close by. You may want to start from scratch and talk with the undergraduate chapter or check out there website maybe you will get some contact info that way.

Can anyone list the required materials for graduate membership into Alpha Kappa Alpha?
Q. I found the pre-rush checklist, community service and interest forms for undergraduate membership which basically guide you on what you will have to turn in and would like to know of a similar list for those interested in becoming graduate members. I know it is by invitation but would like to get an idea of just what I would need to turn in. Like is there a community service requirement for graduate membership and about how many hours would I need to have? I know with undergrad the community service has to have been done within a max of 2 yrs, is it the same with graduate membership? I just would like as much info on the paperwork requirements to try to meet all requirements before pursuing graduate membership?

A. Since Graduate Chapter membership is by invitation only that information can NOT be shared until one recieves an invitation. As you can imagine, if we require undergraduates to complete community service then you could assume that we expect the same if not more from graduates. As we are primarily about Sisterhood, Service, and Scholarship we pay GREAT attention to the community service endeavors of potential candidates for membership. Good Luck

Graduate Membership Into Alpha Kappa Alpha...?
Q. I am very interested in becoming a Member at the graduate level for Alpha Kappa Alpha and i understand that it is by invitation only. I currently do not know any of the members and I am new to the community. How do i get involved so that i am able to get to know that member(and vise versa)? I have contacted the local chapter and when i got a response i was told to refer to the national website. I understand its invitation only but how am i suppose to show any interest? A. Interest is expressed through individual action. By becoming a leader within your community, you will inevitably be aligned with at least one member of the organization. As my above Soror expressed- through your church, volunteer efforts, job etc. there are Women of Alpha Kappa Alpha. In addition, I applaud your persistence. If this is something that lives in your heart, let nothing stop you. Identify the necessary steps to reach your goal and make it happen. A. Yes there is. Undergrads at most schools come in a lot and every year more come in. Most schools accept about 1,000-2,000 applicants freshman. And the acceptance rate for undergrads is a lot higher than graduate. Undergrads come in to school for an associates or bachelors degree and some go on to try for Grad school. Grad school is tough if you want to go a good one and get a really good education. You have to not only have a high GPA for grad school, but you also have to stand out from other applicants. The top Grad schools don't accept many grads and the acceptance rate is really low and significantly lower than undergrads. The process is different because in Grad school they look more into you and what you have done. They look… [cont.]

How do I get information for Alpha Kappa Alpha graduate/ city wide membership?
Q. I posted a question long ago about community events to introduce myself to the graduate chapters here in Japan, to no avail despite the generous information from sweetpea. As a techer, there just seemed to be no plausible way to find/ get to community service or events open to the public anywhere. The international chapter website has not helped. I'll be leaving Japan and moving to Duluth, GA in April. I have contacted the local graduate chapters by email and still no response. I wonder if I come off strange just for asking about an events calendar being sure not to solicit membership. My hope is to have better success in at least getting information on events and membership once I move. Any advice?

How can I be a reservist after I graduate Army ROTC?
Q. I am currently in the process of joining Army ROTC. I was wondering if the only way I could graduate and become a army reservist or part of the national guard was the simultaneous membership program, or could I just go through the regular process in ROTC.
Asked by John - Thu Sep 10 18:26:34 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you go through ROTC, then as long as you do not accept an active duty scholarship, you can commission Guard or Reserve if you wish. Even so, I would recommend that you do SMP as it does not commit you to anything, yet it gets you some extra pay during your time in ROTC and gets you years of service for pay once you commission which is a huge jump in pay.

Asked by bigpoppamike21 - Thu Sep 6 02:04:14 2007 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments
A. If it was professional dues required for your profession than you could deduct the dues on Schedule A - Itemized Deduction under miscellaneous itemized deductions, but would have to exceed 2% of your AGI for the excess to be deductible. But if you just wanted to join the alumni association, then no, it's not deductible.

A. You must be invited to join the grad chapter, unlike the undergrad chapters, where you tell them you want to join and they decide whether or not you get in. I can only imagine that maybe they felt the person did not "fit" what an AKA should be. Also, unfortunately, sometimes the decision is just unfair and not based on anything substantial.

How much does a membership at Washington Sports Club cost?
Q. I'm moving to DC in February after graduating from college, and I'm looking for a gym to replace the free gym at school. I checked WSC's website, but it doesn't list any prices. Does anyone know how much the Gold level or other memberships cost for the Glover Park location? Or does anyone recommend another gym? Thanks!

A. Washington Sports Club has a new member fee of $100. (That's on their specials.?) Each month, costs about $70 a month. You should call them to see what kind of specials they are running! Besides Washingotn Sports Club, you should also check out Bally's and Sport and Health. They all cost about the same. There are some local gyms in DC. Such as Results.

Question about joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc Graduate Chapter. Please Help!?
Q. I am interested in joining a graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. in Charlotte NC or Durham/ Raleigh NC. I am in law school in Durham but my permanent residence is in Charlotte. I had the opportunity at an early age to be mentored by members of Iota Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. I was afforded this opportunity by participating in an outstanding service program, the Institute for Growth and Development of African American Youth. I was unable to become a member of my undergrad chapter. I know that Graduate Membership is by invitation only. I have looked up the chapters in Charlotte and Durham/ Raleigh but I do not know if it is appropriate to contact them. And if I did contract them what… [cont.]

A. Focus on law and subordinate things like sororities. Get ready for the competition to eat you alive. If you insist, join a legal (co-ed) fraternity. Try going to the office of student affairs for some advice.

A. Greetings aspirant of Alpha Kappa Alpha! By your statement, you are implying that you have been invited to join AKA? If so, congratulations!
