A. Membership into most BLGOs is by membership only. Get incontact with members of the grad chapter members regarding membership. A good way to met the members is through community service.

A. There is always the possibility that the GPA requirement will change, however currently the requirement is a 2.5 or C+ average. If any changes will be made it will definitely be posted on the national website: www.aka1908.com.

AKA Sorority: What is included in the graduate chapter membership cost?
Q. I heard that the graduate chapter membership cost can range from $1000 to $1500, depending on the size of the chapter. What does this cost pay for or what is included in the cost?

A. As someone who has worked in the fraternity/sorority arena at universities, maybe I can help answer your question. Although I am not 100% knowledgeable about sorority membership costs and dues, I know that the reason why the cost is fairly steep ($1000 to $1500) is to cover your membership since you'd be entering at the graduate level. Unfortunately, it doesn't pay for any shiny necklaces or plaques or anything, only your membership. I had one gentleman with the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity tell me that graduate chapters charge more since you enter later than at the undergraduate level. It is also a way to weed out the serious contenders for membership from the pretenders. Having been exposed to the Greek organizations both at a… [cont.]

Alpha Kappa Alpha Graduate Membership?
Q. I would like to know if it is possible to be currently enrolled in Graduate school and pursue or obtain membership with AKA? My graduate gpa is higher than my undergraduate gpa and I wanted to know whether members would accept my graduate transcript? Also would the same rules apply as with undergrad (Full time prior and current semester)? Thank you for your help.

A. I am a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, and if you do not have a Master's degree, then your grade point average from your undergraduate transcript will be needed to determine if you meet the GPA requirements. This applies even if you are in graduate school. Only when you have earned a Master's degree or higher, is when your GPA is not evaluated. Hope this helps.

Is membership into an African American Sorority at the graduate level obtainable?
Q. I am a graduate from college and i would like to join a sorority. I have heard that It is almost impossible to become a member at the graduate level. What are some tips to show interest in an African Merican sorority. Also is membership taken throughout the year or is it only at specific times of the year? If a member from any pan-hellenic sorority could respond it would be greatly appreciated.

A. sororitysister.net should help a little. i pledged on a graduate level, it was not difficult, but i believe that once people graduate they are more focused. it is a lot of work, you need to find out what grad chapters are located in your area. keep in mind, some sorors dont consider you to be "legit" if you are greek "on paper", so be warned you have to work hard at it. it can be expensive too. good luck!

A. I do not know exactly what you mean by 'it looks better', but if you have an opportunity to persue membership while on the undergraduate level I would take it. If you want to take your chances to wait until Graduate Chapter then by all means wait. I have suggested that one of my friends wait because I felt that she was not ready. She had a lot of other things on her plate and adding a Sorority at the time would overwhelm her if she had been granted membership. Figure out if you have time for The Sorority at the time. Weigh your options. Only after you have done all of that will you be able to answer that question for YOURSELF. Good luck!

Graduate Membership Alpha Kappa Alpha?
Q. When the Graduate Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha's Membership Intake Process is by invitation only, does this mean that one is not allowed to write a letter of interest? I prefer that a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha answers this question. Thanking you in advance
Asked by Samantha - Wed Mar 25 00:38:01 2009 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Good Morning! Being that membership on the grad level is by invitation only, the need for letters of interest are not accepted. They are only taken on the level of membership through which admission can be solicited and that is the undergraduate level. Please see our national website for further information regarding membership criteria: You are welcomed to email me for further information/assistance. I will help you with any allowable assistance. Undergraduate vs. Graduate membership of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated?
Q. I am a college senior who is seriously interested in membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. For various (personal) reasons I have been unable to seek membership until this school year. I am interested in learning more about the sorority and was wondering if it would be appropriate to seek out a mentor in an area grad chapter, especially since there is a good chance that my undergraduate institution will not be doing MIP in 2009-2010. I am prepared to attend area graduate chapter events ( I have already attended many undergraduate ones) to network, as I would like to build lasting bonds in the chapter I would (potentially) be invited to join after I graduate college. Would it be considered too forward to begin this process… [cont.]

A. The biggest difference in undergraduate and graduate chapter is that graduate chapter is invitation only. If you have a graduate member who you are rather close too, then I would confine in her your interest but just remember everyone is not as receptive. If you are carrying yourself with high ethical and moral standards, I don't see why a graduate chapter would not offer membership to you. Just be yourself and if it is might to happen, it will. As for programs, please go to aka1908.com. You will see our national programs, as for chapter programs whether it be graduate or undergraduate, they can vary depending on chapter.

Sponsor for Alpha Kappa Alpha graduate chapter level membership?
Q. This is a bit confusing. I have been told and have read many posts stating a prospective candidate must have a sponsor and 2 co-sponsors in order to obtain membership on the graduate level. The sponsor must be an active member of the chapter of interest and must have attended certain conferences. The website for Alpha Kappa Alpha only mentions to attend events sponsored by the chapter to become acquainted with members of the chapter. Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha tend to refer those who are interested to the national website for all information needed for membership but yet and still the members also tend to mention you have to have a sponsor. A. I'm not a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., but an aspirant. I've been pursuing graduate membership for four years (moved once), and have become acquainted with members in my chapter of interest, but I'm sure you know...graduate chapters do not have MIP that often. So, even if you are acquainted with a member (or two, or three) that could possibly be your sponsors...one must wait until the time comes to possibly have your name put up for an invitation. Also, I've been told you shouldn't ask someone to sponsor you. Additionally, we do not know if there are members we are acquainted with that already is/wants to sponsor someone else (that we either aren't aware of or haven't seen at the same events we've attended). Can anyone list the required materials for graduate membership into Alpha Kappa Alpha?
Q. I found the pre-rush checklist, community service and interest forms for undergraduate membership which basically guide you on what you will have to turn in and would like to know of a similar list for those interested in becoming graduate members. I know it is by invitation but would like to get an idea of just what I would need to turn in. Like is there a community service requirement for graduate membership and about how many hours would I need to have? I know with undergrad the community service has to have been done within a max of 2 yrs, is it the same with graduate membership? I just would like as much info on the paperwork requirements to try to meet all requirements before pursuing graduate membership?
Asked by LadyS - Mon Jul 7 01:29:09 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Since Graduate Chapter membership is by invitation only that information can NOT be shared until one recieves an invitation. As you can imagine, if we require undergraduates to complete community service then you could assume that we expect the same if not more from graduates. As we are primarily about Sisterhood, Service, and Scholarship we pay GREAT attention to the community service endeavors of potential candidates for membership. Good Luck

Graduate Membership (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.)?
Q. Hello all, I am very interested in joining the graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in my area and would like to know if I could contact the local grad chapter in order to request a graduate MIP Collegian Brochure or is this information only intended to be distributed to certain persons at certain times? Thank You in advance!! Also I understand that MIP for graduate chapter is by invitation only, instead of using the words MIP collegian brochure, I mean the organization collegian brochure for general information. Thank you for the additional information.

A. From my research, the graduate chapters do not issue a Collegian Brochure. All the information you need as far as MIP on the graduate chapter can be found on the national website. Keep attending any functions open to the public. When the chapter decides to have a rush, you will need a sponsor or some one in the chapter that can vouch for you.

A. Once you attend their various events and get to know many of the members, then if someone feels that you are what they are looking for then they will invite you in. But a majority has to agree for you to be accepted be offered an invitation. The member does not have to be a board member but of course they must be financially active. good luck!!!

Are the packets given out at an informational meeting..I know u-grad has a Rush...wondering how does one get a membership packet for grad membership? How do the interested ones get the required forms that have to be submitted for membership(for grad chapt)? Are the forms given out before or after the letter of invitation? I have read about the sponsor requirement...my question is about receiving the required forms for a grad chapt. Thank you.

A. Sorry I overlooked the fact you were inquiring about graduate membership. There is no RUSH in graduate chapters, and membership is by invitation only, so you will need to find a local chapter in your area in which you will need to attend events sponsored by the chapter to become acquainted with members of the chapter. Good luck. Additional Details: If you have someone to sponsor you then they would be your informer for ALL information related to the membership intake process. Graduate MIP is different from Undergraduate MIP. There is no date to pick up "Rush Packets" or forms in Graduate chapters because there is no Rush.

Membership into Alumnae Delta Sigma Theta?
Q. I'am very interested in membership into Delta Sigma Theta. Do you have the contact information for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in the Wilmington,NC Alumnae chapter? I am a college graduate and can't seem to find any information on these locations...Any members in the NC area that may/can help me get in contact with members of these communities so I can assist in community service, please don't hesitate to answer. Thank You

A. Just check the Wilmington Alumnae chapter website, and I'm sure that their event calendar and/or "Contact Us" link may be able to help you. (I located it very quickly using a search engine) Good luck!

Pursuing Membership of Delta Sigma Theta Through Alumnae Chapters?
Q. Hi, I will be a recent graduate (May 2010) and during my undergraduate years, I did not have the chance to pursue membership into this organization. I was wondering what is the best way to approach the local graduate chapter? Should I send a letter to the Chapter President, giving some demographics about myself and say that I am interested in attending any public events and/or community service?

A. Congratulations on your upcoming graduation. The best way to approach the local alumnae chapter is to send them a brief letter including the information you mentioned in your question. If the chapter has a website, check their calendar and attend their events so that you can begin forming relationships with members of the chapter.
