When were military haircuts officially used in the US Military and the official why they are used?
Q. I would like to know when and why were military haircuts incorporated in the US military? Or where is it officially stated the when and why of military haircuts? I have a general idea of when it was incorporated and why it is used in the military but I would like to see an official document that would state this. I have looked at many websites and military dress code manuals but could not find it. Maybe some of you military historians can answer this.

Is it important to have a military background to be a President?
Q. I found it interesting because most people want to vote McCain because he has a military background since he was a POW. But does it really matter to have a President who has a military background? If so why? Don't they have military advisers to advise him anyway? Personally, I think it is better that the President does not have any military background because then he/she can see the picture as a whole and he/she can analyze them in every different angle, not just in the military tactics only. But i would love to hear what you think.

A. NO, But lets see McCains experience? Crashed 5 planes! Came in at the bottom of his class! Made 13 tapes for the Vietnamese against the USA! I think I'll go with Obama!

How has being in the military changed you?
Q. Military Commercials always advertise that they'll change you into great leaders when you come home and you're out of the military. I just wanted to know from personal experiences if anyone could give me an example in how being in the military made you a better person/leader. I respect all military people for fighting for my freedom, thanks.

What path would one need to take to become a military scientist?
Q. What sort of path should one take to be a scientist in the military? Is it better to join the military and work towards a doctorate, or is it better to get your advanced degrees and then join the military? Also, if you already have advanced science degrees, is there a different entrance path when you join the military, or is it the same as if you just walked into a recruiter's office off the street? And finally, which branches have heavy science divisions? My scientific leanings are toward physics and astrophysics.
Asked by Billy - Thu Aug 27 00:30:49 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you already have your science degrees, go to a Recruiter, I would suggest Air Force with your background, tell them you wish to apply to Officer Training School. This is where you will get Officer Basic Training and your commission. You can ask for and most likely get an assignment in the fields you stated with relative ease. Have you thought about applying as a civilian directly with NASA or the Federal Government? Air Force Officer Training School (OTS)

How do military wives deal with their husbands being away so much?
Q. My husband has his own business and he is always busy at work. He has been working extra hard these days because of the recession. We always get in fights before he's so busy all the time, then I wonder: how do military wives deal with it? Their husbands are away for months at a time, and overseas. Please tell me (especially if you are a military wife.) I would really appreciate it it. Thanks.

A. You realize it will happen. You have to stay busy. Work, go to school, volunteer your time, start a new hobby etc. Each person learns to cope in their own way but the military offers lots of support groups.

How many civilians work for the military or agencies of the military?
Q. For instance there is approximately 1.1 million US army soldiers. How many civilians are there that work for military agencies? What is the ration for civilians vs military (all military, not just army)? I know a sargeant that repairs tanks and he mentioned how he wants to work for the government or the army as a civilian repairing tanks and get paid much more. Are there many jobs like that, that exist? Did I misunderstand what he said?

A. there is alot of agencies that work for the military, to be honest and this is my opinion but i just got out of the service. i would say the civilian side has more then the actual enlisted. for example u have VT griffin, lockheed martin, hell even the military police is going away and civilans are taking that over too, as well as gate guards.

How will the military help me after college?
Q. I thought of two things: It will look good on my resume. So I will have an easier time getting jobs. And, I could use my four years of military to pay for my masters and doctorate degrees for college. What other benefits could I get from the military?
Asked by !>? - Thu Aug 20 23:46:14 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. What benefits will prior military service give you in the civilian world is a very broad question. First of all, are you in college now or thinking of going to college, or do you have you bachelors? Educational wise you will be eligible for the GI Bill. The current bill the service member pays an initial $1200 or so and than in return receives $40,000 in return for college. You can also opt for an additional kicker around $600 or so and receive a larger sum of education assistance and it extends your time to use the funds. However this GI Bill hasn't been updated since 1944 and thankfully the government has realized this. There is a new GI bill in the works still pending approval, but it will give all prior service members about $80,000 to… [cont.]

Is encouraging youths to seek alternatives to the Military a good project to start?
Q. Such as I will join a group that offers alternatives to the military, I may branch off and do my own thing. I want to enourage 10,000 youths to seek an alternative to the Military, then my mission is complete. Ultimately, the Military will improve, and people will be generally less unhappy. Honestly the military is not a jobs program and doesn't help people get a job after a 4 to 6 years enlistment. It gives general work experiance, but that is about it. The qualifications do not necessarly translate well or cross over into the civilian sector in mot cases. The GI Bill isn't what it is cracked-up to be, neither is T.A. Recruiters LIE, someone needs to save these people from these predators.

How much longer can the US military keep lowering its standards to meet quotas?
Q. Right around the time I got out of the army, an NCO of mine and I were talking about this. She talked about how the military is letting in people they really should not be letting in just to get the bare minumum. You could get in before with a small criminal background, but now you can get with in with a larger one. That's the problem. We have an all-volunteer military in an unpopular war. Not enough people are joining up. It's not just enlistment, but re-enlistment. People in are getting out because they've done multiple tours in Iraq, and they're sick of going and don't want to go back. A lot of the bad stuff coming from troops in Iraq is from troops who before the Iraq War would not have been let in. Can the US military really keep… [cont.]

What techniques does the military use to strip a person of their pride?
Q. I have heard from several different sources that the military first strips a person of his pride and then rebuilds them up again. Is this all branches of the military? How, exactly, do they do it?
Asked by Poindexter - Sat Jun 14 00:47:49 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I don't think "pride" is the right word here. The military needs people to work as a unit, not as a bunch of individuals. The purpose of basic military training is to make you quit thinking of yourself first and to adjust your attitude to a military way of thinking...that means honor, duty, commitment, service before self, and the ability to follow orders. All branches do it...but the techniques may vary. They do it by making sure you are very rushed and learning new and sometimes difficult things every waking moment. The process of applying significant physical and mental stress allows your training/drill instructors to see if you have what it takes to be successful in the military, or to get you out of the military before they spend… [cont.]

A. No, that Im sure she needs a passport for. Only active duty can travel on orders and military ID to and from their duty station because it is as if they never left the U.S. She needs to apply(if she does not have it) for a Philippine Passport, then you need to find out if she needs a Visa to enter Europe (there are websites that tell you what countries need visas to enter certain countries). Once she arrives in Portugal, I believe you will have to apply for a sojourners visa so that she can stay with you during your tour. Your command should be able to give you that information. If you need further help, go to the Family Fleet Services in your area, and Im sure they will assist you as much as possible, or they will guide you in the… [cont.]

AF and I thinkthe Armyhas their own Post Grad school as well. n NPS also offers the option of Doctorates as well, but that is VERY Hard to get.. out of the several hundred or so graduating with DH,, 3 were doctoral candidates.

A. The "most advanced" jets are likely to be unknown to the general public and surely kept secret by other governments around the world. The general consensus seems to be that the worlds most advanced fighter jet is the F-35B Lightning II, but who knows what the Chinese have in their arsenals.

It can be a government position (i.e. cabinet, etc.) but it must involve military or defense or something of the sort. A. You didn't say what country you are in but I'll assume the US. Nearly any job you can think of is available to you in the military. The cool part is they will training and if you can avoid combat, you can get paid to do what you love. I don't know all the current details of military recruitment so you'll need to talk to a recruiter. I can't emphasis this enough, don't believe what they say until you see the enlistment contract you'll be signing. 99% of recruiters are honest but a few will promise anything. I would also insist on speaking with someone in the military who is doing the career you want to pursue. Mike Honeycutt
