Can I pledge and how do I go about pledging Alpha Kappa Alpha at a different University?
Q. I am a student at LIU in New York but I am transferring to the Art Institute in Los Angeles but I have been and I am extremely interested in the Membership Intake Process. I am aware that the Art Institute does not have an sororities. My question is can I pledge at a University in LA where there is an active chapter and if so how do I go about getting information of events to attend and when rush week will be held?
Asked by ibreathefashion - Sun Dec 13 17:43:11 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Unfortunately the Art Institute is not a 4 year College or University where college hours are earned, so therefore you would not be able to pursue a chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, unless you are matriculating at a 4 year college. If you earn a Bachelor's Degree then you may pursue membership in a graduate chapter. There is no pledging in Alpha Kappa Alpha, only a membership intake process.

Im interested in pledging to Alpha Kappa Alpha. I want to know how to say I think skee wee.?
Q. I know I have to be carefull and not say it if im not in it. But what's the best way to say it correctly(please don't mention any hatefull things towards this sorority) And what should I expect when pledging?
Asked by lenna - Mon May 12 19:35:28 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Dear Lenna, Please, don't worry. You should never say 'skee-wee' until you are a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha. You will be taught how to say it correctly by other members; unfortunately, I still can't say it well and I've been a member for almost 15 years! LOL!!! It isn't important whether you can skee-wee or not, what is important : What are you doing to help the community? Actually, Alpha Kappa Alpha does not pledge its initiates. All nine groups of the National Pan Hellenic Council enacted the Membership Intake Process in 1990 because some initiates were being harmed and hazed (and killed) instead of being pledged. Here is some information from our website: The process for undergraduate membership begins with Rush. The date,… [cont.]

I am very interested in pledging Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority?
Q. Hello and Thank you to those who took the time to read and answer my question. I am currently a sophmore, and have always been interested in Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. I know that G.P.A is a major factor in pledging any sorority. My question is. during my freshman my grades were very bad(withdrew from classes due to family problems), Although I managed to bring my grades up and maintain my G.P.A, I would like to know will that affect my chances in receiving an acceptance letter to join the line?

A. Depending on your school, it's all in who you know. Is your GPA over a 2.5? Do you have community service? If not, then worry about those things first before you think about pledging a sorority in which your grades may drop even further. Remember: there is always Grad chapters!

A. Step 1 my dear interested is to find out if your campus indeed has an ACTIVE chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Just because you see members on campus, unfortunately doesn't always mean they are active so you want to be clear on that. Step 2 go to the national website www.aka1908.com and familiarize yourself with the Sorority and its' history. Research other Sororities also to make sure Alpha Kappa Alpha is for you. Step 3. Go to any events sponsored by the chapter on campus, and in the community. You will become familiar with the members and they of you, that way you are not saying Hi, I'm interested you know. Most people know by not that coming to events pretty much deems that you are interested when you come over and over… [cont.]

A. Hello BEAUTY, Here are the guidelines that I normally give out regarding a letter of interest. FYI: We no longer refer to the process as pledging, it is now called the Membership Intake Process/MIP as the sorority is a non-pledging, non-hazing entity and has strict policies against participating in any activities that are or can be associated with pledging. There are serious penalties for disregarding the policies up to and including suspension and/or expulsion from the sorority for life. Regarding the Letter of Interest: What you want is for my sorors to be impressed with you from your letter. Here are some guidelines: ***The letter should be one page in length. ***It should tell us why, specifically, you believe that you… [cont.]

A. Just a bit of advice, and not trying to sound rude but please check your spelling and grammar before posting publicly online. This is a collegiate organization and you should present yourself as an educated individual. To answer your question no I don't think you're too old. Good luck.

A. Hello. I am not a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha but first of all you should definitely change your screen name. "Future AKA 1908" is misleading to the members of the organization and gives them the impression that you think that you are guaranteed membership, which none of us are. Secondly the term "pledge" or "pledging" no longer exists in the sorority and the proper term is MIP - Membership Intake Process. I would start by researching the national website for Alpha Kappa Alpha www.aka1908.com to learn more about the sorority and to see if this is the organization that you really want to pursue. In addition you should ask you aunt and sister any questions that are unanswered. May God Bless you in your endeavors. P.S. I hope you do not… [cont.]

A. As a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, I suggest that you just try to get to know some of the brothers with out mentioning Alpha up front. If you come to now them well enough chances are they will bring it up eventually. Try to support our events, many of which are open to the public. Other than that I can't tell you much more, you have to find you way, just like all of us brothers who where once in your shoes. P.S. Humility and Respect are Key

A. Unfortunately no. You must attend a college or university that grants bachelor's degrees. If you attend a senior college, you'll have a better opportunity. Also, here is more information from the www.aka1908.org website: Undergraduate Membership Requirements: * Matriculation as a full-time student where the campus chapter is located; or matriculation as a full-time student in a school in the community where a city chapter of undergraduate status is located; * Completion of at least one successful grading period (or a defined by the university) as a full-time student at the institution where application is made; * A cumulative average of C+ and semester average of C+ immediately prior to submitting an application for… [cont.]

A. Good Afternoon, First and foremost Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc is a non hazing, non-pledging entity. The process to gain membership is now called MIP (Membership Intake Process). It is guided by the rules and regulations as set forth by our International Office. Different Institutions may have their MIP t different times, but the overall procedure for the carring out of the initiation of new memership is a uniformed International procedure. Wanting to pledge Alpha Kappa Alpha ,,?
Q. Hey all. I am currently a freshmen in college with a 3.0 gpa ..I HEARD that there was a new line coming out at my school soon but am not for sure. Anyway; my question is for anyone who has ever pledged anything or know someone who has. What are your suggestions? Should I attend all of their functions to show that I am serious about pledging, even if they won't have a line until my Junior year? How often do Alpha Kappa Alpha's have a line? Is it every three semesters? How can you tell if they like you or not? Is it good if they stop you on campus and ask you questions? And if I (sometimes) hang with two girls that the AKA's don't like (i know for sure; one of them talks to one of the AKA's ex boyfriends) should i stop hanging around… [cont.]

A. First of all, congrats on maintaining a 3.0 GPA. Second, "pledging" was banned in all the D9 organizations. Third, Yes! You should attend all the events so that my Sisters can get to know you and vice versa. Fourth, keep your ears and eyes open, we do Not spoon feed potential members. Do your research!! AKA isn't for everyone. It is a LIFE-long commitment, not just another organization to add to your resume. Be sure that you are active in your community. Lastly, my Sisters come from all backgrounds, and in all shapes and sizes. There is no such thing as a "stereotypical" member of my organization. Please don't feed into the myths. If you want to talk more privately feel free to email me...

A. If its in America, depending on the state and individual college there are anti-hazing laws which are punishable by fines, prison, and the college can revoke their charter and kick them out of the school. Most members are sworn to secrecy and will NOT tell you what goes on during pledging. If you decide to pledge and feel as though you have been hazed you should let the police and school administrators know, other than that just have fun and don't be nervous.

A. A large part of being a capable and functional member of any sorority or fraternity is confidence. We seek individuals who would be an asset to the organization, the community and ultimately, the world. We want impressive ambassadors to the public, so that when others see any member at any given time, they will admire and want to be a part of us. Before you initiate this process, however, do not be afraid to be unapologetically yourself! Take the initiative to discover who YOU are and what you are all about before you attempt to join a group. You will be a better person for it and the sorority would be too, if you are accepted. Don't let acceptance into a group make or break your importance in this world. Nothing is worse than a… [cont.]
