What plant is used to construct a basement raft foundation?
Q. For a college assignment (construction management) we have been asked to find out what plant would be used to create a raft foundation for a basement car park. My initial thought is concrete mixers and the various pumps and booms used to transport the stuff to the excavation but then I'm strating to think about the concrete reinforcement - what would that need? Crane perhaps? what about cutting equipment?? Aggh! Answers greatly appreciated :)

A. Second and third answers are helpful to you, the missing info is the water proofing membranes and Vapour barriers. You need to contact a laboratory to make certain tests, for soil compaction, soil protector test , slump test and cube or cylinder tests for RCC. You have to do a soil investigation test and related water table level as well.

Am i right in that you would use a raft foundation when building directly onto rock?
Q. Thanks for your help
Asked by Tim S - Fri Mar 9 18:02:47 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Not as a rule. Although there are many kinds of raft foundations they are not generally very strong and are better suited to softer ground where they can spread the load. Obviously it would depend on the state of the rock, and how thick, but usually no foundations are required, or sometimes piles if it is a bit loose.

A. Ok I'm not sure about the terminology here but I assume by raft foundation you mean a spread concrete footing. These are used where you have stable soil, (Not expansive clays). The purpose is the spread out the load on the foundation so that the pressure exerted by the building on the soil will not exceed the soil bearing capacity.

Q. do you put expansion joint on a raft foundation?
Asked by Sonny - Sat Feb 2 08:11:09 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Concrete always needs control joints and expansion joints unless its in a controlled temperature environment, which is very unlikely. By raft foundation I'm assuming you mean an Alaskan slab or floating slab that is thickened/reinforced at the bearing points. This type of slab is called a structural slab because it can "float" or span over weak spots in the subgrade without damage/excessive movement to the building resting on it. But it will still expand and contract with temperature changes since the reinforcement expands and contracts the same amount as concrete.

A raft foundation is use to distribute the buidling pressure over a large area so the soil can bear the stress. Think of it this way. What foundation would put less stress on the soil? a 500 square foot foundation or a 1000 square foot foundation. A. If only static loads for tanks an vessels , the design of the raft foundation is simple, all you require is to find the total load from the tank and vessel , then divide it to the given soil bearing capacity , or check which is greater the load per m2 from the tank or the soil bearing capacity, the greater load use it as distribution load and design the raft as an inverted slab with inverted beams. Machine foundations you apply the design of normal footing and calculate the vibration stresses which can be found in BS or ASTM Standards

Q. what is the best foundation type to use in firm brown and light grey sandy clay soil? i can choose fromstip, raft, pile and pad and why would is be best?
Asked by michael w - Tue Mar 13 09:35:56 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You need to provide a lot more information. If you were to pile the foundations, what depth is bedrock and what is it? Do you have any SPT data? What is the Geological sequence and thicknesses - borehole logs? Sandy clay soil would indicate the potential for differential settlement between sandy areas and clay areas.

A. Detailers should know either BS Code (British Code) and ACI (American Concrete Institute) and other structural steel codes to know all of these. To give you an example: Colum to beam connection: There should be additional anchorage length of the beam top and bottom reinforcement to the column. Usually 50D or 50 x the nominal diameter of the rebards is the length of anchorage from the face of the column. Shear wall to raft foundation - Vertical bards should be anchored down to the top of the bottom bar. Sometimes Chair bars are used for anchoring when your raft is too thick. Anchorage lenght is minimum of 500mm or .5m Cantilever beam - top bars of cantilever beam should be anchored on its support at least 50D continuous beam - the… [cont.]

A. First - Notify the builder of the problems in WRITING. Send the letter certified mail with a return receipt showing he got it.The US Post Office can tell you how to do this and do it for you. Make sure you have his correct address. If he/she doesn't respond- Call your local Electric Utility and see if they have a free energy audit program. They have a special company come out and run an energy loss audit on your home. If it's not available try a local insulation company- these are the companies homebuilders use to insulate new houses for them. The larger ones usually have thermal scan instruments that show heat loss areas.
